Learning Trends to Watch in 2023
Learning Trends to Watch in 2023
Small business owners and corporate instructional design teams are witnessing a shift in many areas that will make a great impact on learning and development strategies for 2023 and beyond. So now the question is, what will L&D look like in 2023?
Recently, Vanessa Alzate, owner, and CEO of Anchored Training hosted a webinar on Learning Trends to Watch for in 2023. Let’s take a look at some of the key findings and highlights from inside this session.
The way we see it here at Anchored Training, there are 3 main trends that we should be focusing on to create transformative learning in 2023:
Video content
Repurposing content
Community
Video Is King
Video has become king when it comes to preferred content consumption. And the best part is, you no longer need high-caliber video content to reach your audience. An opportunity for growth in video creation and content is taking cues from social media. For example, TikTok is a social media platform that hosts short, to-the-point, engaging videos that are equally entertaining. The content is “bingeable” and easy to access.
The idea is not to replace our larger learning initiatives, but rather to supplement and support learning to ensure the main principles and key points are communicated. Here are some learning topics that work well with the style of videos that support learning:
How-to
Tips and tricks
Best practices
Motivation
Community-building
Upskilling/Reskilling
Onboarding
Repurposing Content
With eLearning on the rise, corporate L&D teams are faced with the constant push to upgrade their learning content. This is where repurposing comes into play. You can take one long-form piece of content you already have in your library, and create bite-sized pieces of content.
For example, you’re last DEI training can be broken down into multiple pieces of content including:
eLearning module - modules to create a learning path and utilized in multiple pathways
Microlearning - videos for a knowledge base or TikTok-style platform
Text - email drip campaigns for seasonal topics
Text - best practices to share in communities
Exercises - Workshops
One more thing to consider, repurposing content frees up development time, helping the L&D department stay focused on creating content from a proactive state rather than a reactive state.
Establish a Learning Community
Learning communities create a space for learners to connect with like-minded individuals that may be experiencing similar pain points. It is also a great place for learners to leverage the experience of those who have already worked through their specific pain points.
As companies continue to settle into remote and/or hybrid environments, we need to ensure learners still have the space to connect and collaborate in a virtual environment. Here are some ways we see successful learning communities being utilized:
Collaboration opportunities
Networking opportunities
Gather best practices
Curate tips for the day
Announce news
Share testimonials
Share feedback with others
Learning communities help support your group of learners allowing you to create more content with fewer resources. When thinking about establishing learning communities, it is important to plan for a few things including:
Content
Moderation
Management
Marketing
Incentive to be in the community
If you are intentional with planning and executing your content, you will get similar results as you would from a full training without the need for a huge budget.
